Many students find love during their time at Birmingham. We bring you stories of University relationships that have stood the test of time.
Baljinder Singh Atwal (LLB Law, 2015) and Cadhla Atwal-Corrigan (LLB Law, 2015)
Bal says: ‘We met in 2015 in final year during a Civil Evidence and Procedure module; Cadhla asked me if she could borrow a pen and the rest is history. We’re both qualified solicitors so put our degrees to good use in our careers and I’m proud to be a mentor to students at Birmingham! We got married in June 2024 and Cadhla’s parents met at the University too!’
James (Jamie) Bull (BA Geography, 1994) and Catherine Bull (née Graydon) (BA Geography, 1994)
Jamie says: ‘The University of Birmingham still means a lot to us – so much that we named our house Griffin Court after our first-year University accommodation! Catherine and I met during our first year at Birmingham – both studying Geography and living at the now demolished Griffin Close. We have very happy memories of our time at Birmingham and the friends made, many of whom joined us at our wedding in 2001. 30 years since graduation and our eldest daughter is due to graduate this summer (sadly not from Birmingham!) with another two following closely behind.’
Di Kang (MSc Communications Engineering, 2019) and Cheng Gao (MSc Communications Engineering, 2019)
Di says: ‘My husband and I met while studying at the University of Birmingham. We fell in love in Birmingham and got married last October in Nanjing. I am so grateful to have met such an important person in my life in Birmingham.’
Di hosted one of our 47 Global Alumni Gatherings in 2024 in Nanjing. If you are interested in hosting one next year, get in touch with our events team on alumnievents@contacts.bham.ac.uk
Jennifer Malcolm (née Cook) (BA English, 2014) and Charlie Malcolm (BA History, 2016)
Jennifer says: ‘On 16 December 2023, I married fellow University of Birmingham graduate Charlie Malcolm. We have fond memories of our time in Birmingham, with the campus being the setting for many of our early dates together. Whilst we now live in London, we have friends who stayed in Birmingham and always love to return and relive those happy memories. We shared our wedding day with many of the friends we met at university.’
Alison Spencer (BSc Psychology, 1993) and Paul Scandrett (BSc Physics, 1994)
My parents met in the Goose pub (formerly the OVT) whilst both studying at the University of Birmingham in the 90's. They married in 1998 and had me in 1999. I attended the University myself between 2017 and 2020, and now work at the University in the Institute of Applied Health Research. Katie (daughter of Alison and Paul)
