Our graduates are among the best advocates for a Birmingham education and play a key role in helping to inspire those looking to follow in their footsteps across the globe.
Do you remember what made you realise that Birmingham was the place for you? Was it the vibrant campus, the course, the city? Whatever it was, sharing your experiences on campus with prospective students can be key to encouraging them to choose Birmingham.
Coming full circle
The University is incredibly grateful to our global community of volunteers who give their time.
Arief Abdul Samad (MEng Chemical Engineering, 2021) volunteered at a College of Engineering and Physical Sciences offer-holder event in Kuala Lumpur.
He says: ‘It was a really fulfilling experience. The best part was the conversations—answering their questions, sharing personal stories and seeing their excitement when they realized what’s ahead. Going back and sharing my journey with students who are about to take the same path felt like coming full circle. I remember being in their shoes, excited but also unsure about what to expect. As an international student stepping into the UK for the first time, it was overwhelming, so being able to provide some clarity and reassurance was meaningful. Plus, it was nice to reflect on my own time at Birmingham and realize how much I’ve grown since then.’
Matthew Harrison (BSc Physics with International Study, 2015) gave his time to share his experiences of studying at Birmingham at a study abroad fair in Cape Town.
He says: ‘The University of Birmingham literally changed my life and it's a privilege to give back, especially from halfway across the world! I thoroughly enjoyed speaking with prospective students about my time in Birmingham, the University and its beautiful campus, facilities and societies that helped make my time there so wonderful. I love the thought that they might be going on to enjoy their time as much as I did.’
Inspiring students
Students tell us that a key part of their decision to choose Birmingham is based on the amazing alumni they got to meet. As a student Akansha Singh (MBA, 2024) was reunited on campus with a graduate who inspired her at a recruitment event in India. She says:
‘Rishi Sher Singh motivated me to embark on the University of Birmingham MBA journey. Meeting him again almost a year later feels incredibly fitting, as it gives me the opportunity to reflect on the progress and growth I have experienced since our first encounter. Thank you, Rishi, for your guidance and inspiration.’
